At Low House Farm, change is in the air, and it's all about embracing a new approach to farming—one that places a strong emphasis on preserving and enhancing our environment. For over four decades, we followed traditional sheep farming methods, but recently, we embarked on a journey towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.
Our decision to transition from sheep farming to raising a small herd of native-breed English cattle, exclusively nourished by natural grass, was born out of a commitment to protect and rejuvenate our surroundings. One of our primary objectives was to rehabilitate our soil, which had suffered from erosion and depletion due to the relentless grazing habits of sheep. Since making the switch to shorthorn cattle, we've witnessed a remarkable transformation. The return of diverse plant species and flowers to our farm has been a welcomed sight, accompanied by the delightful return of insects and birds.
But our dedication to conservation doesn't stop at the pastures. In collaboration with the South Cumbria River Trust, we've undertaken a project to restore the natural floodplain of the river Sprint, which runs alongside our farmland. The creation of ponds not only mitigates downstream flooding but has also rekindled the presence of birds, plants, and various wildlife species.
Our farm is also home to 30 acres of ancient English woodland, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). In partnership with Natural England and other conservationists, we are committed to the improvement and preservation of this cherished woodland. In spring, it comes alive with the vibrant hues of bluebells and wild garlic, providing a haven for local biodiversity.
At Low House Farm, we're on a mission to prove that farming and conservation can go hand in hand. Our journey towards regenerative agriculture and ecosystem restoration is a testament to our commitment to a sustainable and eco-friendly future. We invite you to join us in this transformative journey as we continue to nurture our land and protect the environment for generations to come.
